Toms blasts Plymouth into semis

PAIGNTON were on the wrong end of a nine-wicket hiding when they ran into Plymouth in the quarter finals of the Devon KO Cup.

Paignton, who could only muster 10 players, opted to bat first, but could only make a total of 165 all out.

George Benton top scored with 58 not out with opener Simon Mantell next best on 26.

Mike Meech (16) shared in a stand of 38 with Benton and skipper Mike Pedley (7) helped add 38 for the sixth wicket.

Pick of the bowlers with four for 20 was Sam Stein.

Plymouth only needed 19.2 overs to polish off the target thanks to a hard-hitting 96 not out off 60 balls from James Toms.

The former Torquay and Barton batter put on 77 with Ben Stein (23) to start the chase and finished it off in tandem with Doug Hewitt (23no).

Plymouth skipper Callum Whittaker said it was a good win for his side, who suffered the disappointment of being beaten the previous day by Premier Division leaders North Devon .

Whittaker said: “It was a shame that Paignton could only bring 10 men, but they had some players missing for various reasons.

“Roll on the semis, which are next month, although I don’t yet know who we’re going to be playing against.”

Elsewhere in the cup quarter-finals, Alphington’s game against Sidmouth was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. The match will now take place on July 3, which is the same date Bovey Tracey will play Heathcoat.

Plympton’s game against Budleigh was rearranged for July 17 by mutual agreement some time ago.

Paignton 165-9 (S Mantell 26, G Benton 58; S Stein 4-20, B Stein 2-26), Plymouth 169-1 (J Toms 96). Plymouth bt Paignton by 9 wkts.
