SUNDAY, JULY 25
HOLDERS Sidmouth are out of the Devon Cup after going down by four wickets to Bovey Tracey in a high-scoring thriller.
Anthony Griffiths and Josh Bess both hit 67 – their opening stand was worth 103 – as Sidmouth amassed 243 for seven in their 40 overs.
Bovey won with five balls to spare and were indebted to 77 not out from in-form Chris Bradley for seeing them home.
Cup side captain Nick Gingell said Bradley batted brilliantly and that Bovey were good value for their victory.
“It was a big total to chase and well done Bovey,” said Gingell.
“We were a bowler light because Luke Bess suffered a chipped bone before he got a chance to get on.
“That left us without a sixth bowler, which we could have done with for a bit of a change while Will Murray and I were going for 140-odd between us.
“We had a bit of bad luck when Johnny Goodwin dropped Faisal Iqbal when he was in the 20s off my bowling. Faisal hit the next two balls for four, and the one after that for six, and went on to make 62.
“Had we got him them it might have been a different game. We might be out of this cup, but we still have the Twenty20 Cup to play for. With the side we have got we fancy going a long way in that, if we can win the county competition first of course.”
Sidmouth visit Brixham on Friday night in the quarter-finals for a place in the county last four.
It’s Paignton next for Bovey Tracey at the Recreation Ground on Sunday, August 8.
After Pete Bradley broke Sidmouth’s opening partnership when he had Bess caught by youngster Ed Wollacott,. Griffiths hung around with a selection of partners before he was fifth out on 226, lbw to Arron DeYoung.
Along the way there was a stand of 71 with Matt Cooke.
Bovey’s innings started disastrously with openers Richard Longstreet and Lewis Hammett run out in that order.
Longstreet was sent back and didn’t make it while Hammett was run-out by a deflection on to the stumps from Will Gater.
Iqbal made Sidmouth pay for dropping him by cracking on to make 62. He put on 63 with Ben Ayres (48) and 77 with Bradley.
Bradley and DeYoung (21) got the target down by 62 more, leaving Pete Bradley to see it through with his brother.
