THE first day of Devon’s Minor Counties Championship game against Dorset at Bournemouth was washed out without a ball being bowled.
Overnight rain left the Dean Park ground saturated and ruled out any prospect of getting under way at 11am.
With puddles on the outfield by mid-morning and no signs of the rain relenting, umpires Steve Bishopp and Mark Southerton only needed the most cursory of inspections before abandoning play for the day.
Devon skipper Neil Hancock said it was a case now of keeping fingers crossed and hoping the weather would improve on Monday and Tuesday.
“In a six-game programme bad weather can play a big part in how your season goes,” said Hancock.
“It is so important to get off to a good start as a side that wins its first two games has a great chance of winning the division.
“You can’t win games of cricket sitting in the pavilion waiting for the rain to stop,”
Weather permitting play was due to start half an hour earlier at 10.30am today to claw back some lost time.
On day two an extra hour can be tacked on after 7pm to make up lost time.
