D East: Honiton clamber into promotion contention

D Division East 2nd XI

With leaders Whimple II inactive it was left to Honiton II to make the big move in the table as they climbed into a promotion place off the back of a 105 run home win over Countess Wear II. Andrew Lapping (80), Joe Dixon (62) and Craig Lapping (35) contributed towards the Honiton total of 225-9. James Sprague took 5-59 for Countess Wear who were then bowled out for 120 with Jerry Carpanini standing alone with a fine knock of 50. Andy Brinsford claimed 4-40 and there were braces for Richard Hill (2-12) and Craig Lapping (2-35).

North Devon III slipped to a third defeat of the season, beaten by 52 runs at Kentisbeare II. Gary Farley (68) and John Farley (21) combined to see the Kents to 203-8. John Wainwright took 6-51 for North Devon who were then bowled out for 151 with only N Smith making runs with a knock of 56. Andy Hazeldean (3-38), Roy Thomas (2-019) and Steve Read (2-22) were the Kents wicket takers.

Exmouth III put a dent in the promotion hopes of Feniton II, beating them by four wickets at Newton Poppleford. Pete Avery (21) and Steve Haysom (19) were the only visiting batsmen to make much progress as Stuart Hart picked up a fivefer and finished with figures of 5-28 whilst 14-year-old Ollie Dawe bagged a brace to finish with 2-7 from seven overs. Young Dawe then took centre stage in the run chase to lead Exmouth to a fine victory with an unbeaten 66. Dawe went to his half century with a six and also scored the winning wins with yet another sweetly struck shot that sailed to the boundary. Jack Sergeant chipped in with 19 for the victors.

Axminster III made sure it was a rare Saturday night of double delight as they emulated the 2nd XI’s success with a maximum six wicket win over visiting Uplyme and Lyme Regis II. The visitors batted first and were bowled out for 119 with only W Blackmore (15) and P Morton (14) making runs. Sam Farrow picked up 3-26 from eight fine overs and Dave Gadson bagged a brace. Adam Whitehouse then led the brisk run chase – it was all over in 11.3 overs as he crashed an unbeaten 85 and Dan Bicknell chipped in with 21.
