Devon close on on promotion
Devon remain in pole position for promotion to Division 2 with a comprehensive victory over Scotland. Match report from Scotland is below.

A lack lustre performance by the Wildcats on the batting side of things, coupled with the now obligatory run-outs, saw the likely Champions of Division 3 collect the full 20 points in this encounter at Axminster Town CC last Sunday.

Kari Anderson won the toss and elected to back her batters, the line-up of which was shuffled slightly to accommodate one or two younger players who had stepped in due to injuries to senior players. This did however provide an opportunity to see them perform at this level.

New opening pairing of Catherine Smaill and Caroline Sweetman are beginning to develop a good understanding and their contrasting styles means they compliment each other very well. However on this occasion they both fell early, and with the needless run out of Lynne Dickson coupled with the unnecessary run out of Kathryn White, the Wildcats were always up against it, finding themselves at 25 for 4 inside the first hour of play. Only 2 more runs were added before Leigh Kasperek was bowled by Neilson for 14, but Charlotte Bascombe and Lorna Jack steadied things briefly, putting on 36, before Bascombe was caught behind off Miles for 15 – the Wildcats top-scorer, save for the 21 wides gifted by Devon’s bowlers.

Anderson had demoted herself to No.8, but she ran out of partners, finishing on 10 not out, as the innings closed in the 38th over with just 81 on the scoreboard.

As tea was not yet available, the two teams turned round quickly, and the Devon innings got off to a flying start, 28 coming off the first 5 overs. However they could not sustain the momentum to finish off the game before the tea interval, thanks mainly to Nadia Wheeler bowling Anderson for 6 and then Priyanaz Chatterji taking a tidy catch off Kari Anderson to dismiss Bowden.

After the break though, Devon made light work of collecting the remaining 34 runs required, finishing off the game in the 18th over, to win by 8 wickets and collect the 20 points.

“Devon are probably the strongest, all round team we’ve come up against in the County Championship campaign this summer” said Kari Anderson. “Their bowling is tidy, without being penetrative, but their strength lies in their batting and in their overall fielding performances” added Vice-Captain Charlotte Bascombe.”Devon were always likely to be too strong for us, as was proved on the day, but there were one or two promising performances to take away from the match, especially Lynne and Lorna’s batting performances and Rebecca and Caroline’s bowling efforts.”

Devon need to collect a minimum of five points from their last remaining game at home to Worcestershire on 13tH September. The match will be played at Plympton CC, 1100 start.
