Devon heartbreak in final fixture
After leading the Division for the majority of the season, Devon's Ladies missed out on a second successive promotion by just one point after slipping to a last day victory against the only side who could overtake them, Worcestershire. Needing a minimum of five points to secure the one promotion slot, they slipped to a five wicket defeat, picking up four points.
After winning the toss Devon opted to bat and after the early loss of Olivia Anderson and Vicky Bowden thing seemed to be going to plan as Heather Knight and Amara Carr took the score to 63, seemingly untroubled. The drinks break came and with it the now customary wicket, as Knight defended a ball which somehow managed to get past bat and pad and roll agonisingly onto the stumps to remove one bail. There followed the turning point of the game as devon's normally reliable, shorn of Giselle Ansley, collapsed, losing 4 wickets for 4 runs. Carr could only sit and watch as the wickets tumbled. One might have thought that was game over but Jodie Dibble came to the crease to join Carr and together the two youngest members of the side added 47 for the 7th wicket before Dibble was caught and bolwed by Holtom. Carr carried on batting in a very mature and patient innings and guided the tail through to the last over and managed to get the score up to 153, finishing on 43 no. A total that could have been enough but in all reality was 30 short of what would ahve been a competitive total.
More bad luck followed as carr developed severe leg cramp and was unable to keep and when Heather Knight was hit in the face from the first ball of the Worcester innings you had the feeling that things were not going to plan. Rebecca Donohue bowled Holtom for 3 with the score on 25 and when Thea Brookes looked to be out stumped soon after things were turning Devon's way. The fact that she was given not out surprised a few, however it did affect too much as she shared in partnerships before falling for a well made 62 with the score on 120. When devon took a fifth wicket, Nielson bowling Greaves with the score on 124 there was a chance that Devon would get the 7 wickets needed to give them the points required to secure the title. it was not to be as Worcester's skipper Coral Handley joined Clare Boycott in seeing the visitors home in the 47th over.
Disappointing for Devon having been at head of things for much of the season, still they can still celebrate a 20/20 promotion and should be very pleased with their performances in their first year at this level.
