On Saturday September 5th Devon U17 Girls and Yorkshire U17 Girls played their semi-final tie on neutral ground at Frenchay Cricket Club, near Bristol. The game was a closely fought contest which was a good advertisement for girls’ / women’s cricket.
Yorkshire won the toss and put Devon in. The majority of Devon’s batsmen found scoring difficult on a wicket where – due to some moss infestation – the ball never really came on to the bat. Giselle Ansley, though, scored a quick 21 before falling LBW and Jodie Dibble (23 not out) added 33 with Clara Nielson in an unbroken ninth wicket stand at the end of Devon’s innings. Shivanie Patel was Yorkshire’s most successful bowler with 4 wickets for 12 runs.
Devon’s score of 138 for 8 off 45 overs may have looked a little below par but initially it appeared that it might be enough as Yorkshire slumped to 12 for 3 with Giselle Ansley taking two wickets and Ellie Hall effecting a run out.
Yorkshire’s Aimee Simms (30) and Jess Watson (22) then came together in an important stand. However, when they were out in quick succession – Aimee LBW to Becky Piddock and Jess caught and bowled by Clara Nielson – Yorkshire also found scoring difficult and the run rate required grew. A quick fire 26 from Caitlin Williams put her side back on track but when she was caught behind by Amara Carr off Clara Yorkshire were 105 for 8 and the odds seemingly were on a Devon win. However, the ninth wicket pair of Hannah Buck and Camilla Westwood played very well and calmly took Yorkshire to victory.
Aimee Simms won the “woman of the match” award for leading Yorkshire’s recovery with the bat and putting the brakes on Devon’s batting with her intelligent slow bowling. Giselle Ansley was Devon’s player of the match for her 21 runs and two wickets for 12 runs.
