NOTHING less than a win will do for Devon when they travel to Wantage on Sunday to play Oxfordshire in their last Minor Counties Trophy Group game.
Qualification for the last eight depends on finishing in the top two – and one of those places has already gone to Cornwall.
Second place is currently filled by Hertfordshire, who have completed their programme of matches.
Oxfordshire and Devon are level on three points each and whoever wins will clamber above Hertfordshire into second place. The losers are out as there are no more games left to play.
Devon haven’t actually finished a game this season as all three group matches have been rained off – two without a ball bowled.
There were promising signs in the rain-ruined game with winless Bedfordshire at Bovey Tracey 10 days ago as Devon bowled well and were on top with the bat when the terminal downpour arrived.
However, Devon need to be on the money from the start at the picturesque Challow & Childrey ground high on the hill overlooking Wantage if they want to get through.
“We haven’t had an ideal start to the season because of the weather, but most of the lads have a couple of league games under their belts now,” said skipper Chris Bradley.
“The front-end batters have got a few runs in the Premier Division and the bowlers have been taking wickets.
“The good thing from our point of view is there are no iffs or maybes about this game. We know we have to win and can concentrate on that rather than hoping someone else does us a favour.
Exeter’s Rob Holman could not play in the aborted game against Bedfordshire due to work commitments, but is available and restored to the squad. Max Curtis, who was 12th man, makes way.
