Devon refuse to run up white flag on title

DEVON haven’t given up on retaining the Minor Counties title they won last season despite the disappointing draw with Berkshire at Finchampstead.

Devon, 167 runs ahead on first innings, were batted out of the game on days two and three as Berkshire amassed 411 for seven.

The game was called off with an hour to go after Devon had been in the field for 158 overs.

Skipper Chris Bradley is rumoured to be on a Cornish beach with his wife and family recovering from bowling 78 overs in two and a half days!

Roger Newman, Devon CCC’s director of cricket, said the 19-point gap between Devon and Cornwall wasn’t wide enough to run up the white flag just yet.

“Maximum points from our last two games are 48 and we are capable of getting them,” said Newman.

“We haven’t lost a game this season and were unbeaten last year so we are still on a winning streak.

“The good thing about the last two games – Dorset at Exeter and Shrosphire at Whitchurch – is they will be on result wickets, not the docile thing we played on against Berkshire.

“If we prepare properly and play in the same way we can win the games and give ourselves a chance.

“I accept whatever we do may not be enough. If Cornwall go on to win it, I will be the first to congratulate them.

“Whatever happens we can feel happy with our season. A number of new, young players have been exposed to Minor Counties cricket for the first time and are showing they are capable players at this level.

“Ryan Bougourd, Peter Bradley, Charles Morris have expanded the pool of players we can call on. With Jack Dart, Josh Mailling and Hallam Kerton waiting in the wings, the future for Devon cricket looks good.”
