Bradley quits as Devon captain

DEVON Cricket captain Chris Bradley has quit the post barely a year after taking it on following the county side’s two wicket defeat by Wales on Tuesday (see page 96).

Bradley was made caretaker captain at the end of the 2011 season, leading Devon to victory over Cambridgeshire in the Minor Counties Championship play-off, and took the job full time in 2012.

The Bovey Tracey spin bowler has been plagued by back trouble throughout his time as Devon skipper. He postponed an operation earlier this year on the problem to carry on playing.

“I have stood down for various reasons,” was all Bradley would say on the reasons behind his resignation.

“Over the past two and a half years I have really enjoyed the opportunity to captain Devon and tried to do it to the best of my ability.

“I want to say a big thank-you to everyone for their support, guidance, advice and company.”

Keith Donohue, Devon’s director of cricket, said he hadn’t had chance to speak to Bradley since he made his decision and was ‘a bit in the dark’ about the reasons.

He added: “Chris has engineered a great team spirit in the squad and enjoyed some successes at the same time.

“I would hope he will continue to be available for selection as he remains a very talented spin bowler.”

Said Donohue: “There are some obvious candidates from without and within, but it is early days yet and nothing will be decided on in a hurry.”

Another name potentially on the shortlist is former Somerset and Notts batsman Matt Wood, who started out with Devon and has played the odd game over the past two years since leaving Trent Bridge.
