An early season 'warm up' game saw a 'Devon' team take on a 'Devon Lions'
team, with a total of 22 players including 16 from the winter training squad and
6 players who had impressed in District cricket divided into 2 teams of
11.
Devon won the toss and elected to bat first. With persistent
light drizzle falling for much of the 1st innings, it was hard to know whether
the conditions were harder for the batters or bowlers. Devon openers Pascoe and
Southgate opted for a 'safety first' approach and were watchful against some
good new ball bowling from Agnew and Nickell. A mixture of good running and some
controlled stroke play saw the pair add 65 for the 1st wicket before an
uncharacteristic shot from Pascoe saw Holifield take a good catch.
Devon captain Ford took to the crease and at the drinks break
Devon had reached 73/1 and the Lions were hopeful of keeping their opponents
well under 200. However, Ford was quickly into his stride and with a worsening
ball, the Lions found it tough to keep him in check. A great innings of 46 of
just 38 balls got the Devon total moving in the right direction. When the
debutant Southgate reached a chanceless 50, the East Devon youngster was retired
to give more of his team the chance to gain time in the middle. This allowed Walker and Jeacock the chance to show their prowess
with the bat and the pair added 63 in 10 overs to get Devon beyond the 200 mark
as overs ran out. For the Lions, several bowlers posted impressive economy rates
in testing conditions, including George Nickell (6-0-22-0) and Noah Ryder
(7-0-32-0). Ben Coen claimed 2 wickets with one apiece for Harry Pryce and Ben
Fitzherbert.
Aiming to chase down 200, the plan for the Lions was
to follow the pattern of the Devon innings and get off to a steady start and
then try to accelerate in the second half of the innings. The plan was going
well as openers Broggio and Fitzherbert got off to a strong start (41/0) until
Fitzherbert missed a straight ball from George Tapley. He was replaced by Alec
Holifield and another solid partnership developed with the impressive Broggio
guiding the Lions to 88/1 in the 24th over and game
on.
Unfortunately for the Lions, both batters fell in quick
succession and 88/1 was soon 88/3 and the next batters could not sustain the
required scoring rate in the face of some very economical bowling from several
of the Devon bowlers. In the final 15 overs, the Lions could only muster 30 runs
despite having plenty of wickets in hand, and the coach's talk after the game
was focussed on the importance of finding ways to score against good bowling.
One key stat from the game is that 5 of the 6 Devon batters posted a strike rate
of 50.00 or higher, whilst not one of the Lions batter got above that
figure.
For Devon, the opening bowlers Eddie Butler and Will Popham
combined for match figures of 15-4-33-2 with all of the other 8 team members
having an opportunity to turn their arms over.
A good start to the
season with lots of players gaining experience with bat and ball as attention
turns to the upcoming county matches against Dorset and Gwent.
