The match was originally a 45 over match, but was reduced to 40 overs following an hour of heavy sea mist. This made life difficult in the field, but both sides ploughed on through the inclement weather.
Cornwall started the innings well scoring at 4 an over for the first 8 overs. However, once Dan Pyle – Shobrooke Park (3 for 5) entered the attack as first change, and Ben Steer – Bovey Tracey (1 for 3) and Dan Wolf – Paignton (2 for 12) applied some added pressure through bowling straight and full, Cornwall fell well behind the required rate required to win the match. Luke Crocker – Exeter also chipped in with a useful 5 over spell, picking up a wicket.
Cornwall finished their innings at 82 for 8 from 40 overs meaning Devon won by 62 runs which is always encouraging and it is always good to beat our neighbours.
It is difficult to learn a lot from a match which was very one sided, but it was good to see our new players bowling with pace and our medium pace bowlers bowling accurately. The continued good form of Sam Lathwell and Jake Reddick gives as confidence. We will face much stiffer opposition against our other neighbours Somerset, so it is vitally important that we sort out our running between the wickets and that we continue to improve our ground fielding.
Thank you to everyone who made the mammoth trip to St. Just. It is always worth it when we win!!!
