Devon Under 12's v Wiltshire Under 12's - Match Report
After the disappointment of loosing to Oxfordshire, Devon were keen to get back to winning ways against Wiltshire at Sandford Cricket Club.A pre-match training session to iron some imperfections from previous matches was the order of the day - areas to address were fielding standards and extras!
With rain forecast for later in the day and a good pitch, Devon won the toss and elected to bat first.Again the target for the innings was 200 runs at close.Devon started cautiously scoring at 3 an over for the first 20 overs.Codd- Abbotskerwell (7) and Reddick – Exeter (10) the high scorers from the previous week going cheaply trying to force the pace in the first half of the Devon innings.
Enter Charlie Barriball – Whitchurch (38) and Alfie Huxtable – Braunton (37)!Both batted maturely and upped the run rate by rotating the strike and punishing the bad ball - Barriball manipulated the ball in to gaps exceptionally well. They added 71 to the score before Huxtable was dismissed.
Additional contributions from Dan Pyle – Ottery St Mary (16*) and Ben Green – Exeter (15) helped the Devon score along to 177 for 8 at close of innings.Although Devon felt this was a below par score they also felt that scoring 5 an over for the last 20 over’s was a good effort and something they hoped to restrict the opposition from doing!
Devon’s pick of the bowlers was Dan Goodey – Plymouth (4 for 16) who bowled with good pace and kept the ball up to the bat. Also having a good time with ball currently is Ben Steer – Bovey Tracey (2 for 6) who is bowling with great control and discipline.
Wiltshire managed to get to 132 before their last wicket fell to the impressive Goodey and an athletic, yet somewhat extravagant diving catch from Ben Steer.Other contributions with the ball came from Ben Green – Exeter (1 for 16), Alfie Huxtable – Braunton CC (2 for 18) and the spin of Toby Codd – Abbotskerswell (1 for 21).The only real innings to note from Wiltshire was a very competent knock by the captain for 43.Extra’s was second top scorer again on 39!
This was Devon’s 5th win out of the 7 matches they have played. However things could have been different had Wiltshire not dropped 4 catches early in the Devon innings.
Both the manager and coach are very happy with the win, yet still feel there is huge room for improvement with the ball and in the field.EXTRAS!!!!!!!!!
