Devon Under 12's v Oxfordshire Under 12's - Match Report
After eventually finding the ground, we were treated to sun baked pitch at Abingdon School on the outskirts of Oxford. Confidence in the camp was high following the previous weeks victory against Dorset, so the team elected to bat first and try and put the home side under pressure in the field.
After a slow start and the loss of Sam Lathwell – Braunton CC in the 9th over, Toby Codd – Abbotskerswell (58) and Jake Reddick – Exeter CC (72) went about building a 137 run partnership with a mix of singles and strong boundary hitting. Each player passing their landmark score of 50 within 3 balls of each other.
With the extreme heat now playing a large factor in shot selection, both players were out in close succession, one run out the other caught and bowled. With the score at 146 for 2 with just 5 over’s remaining Devon new they needed to accelerate to reach their target of 200 from 40 over’s.
On cue, Connor Drew – North Deon CC entered the line-up at number 4 and proceeded to smash the ball to all corners of the ground before he was bowled. His 29 runs coming from just 14 balls! Devon ended their innings at 191 for 6 a few short of their target.
The Oxfordshire innings started with a crash and at 38 for 4 from the first 7 over’s it looked like Devon would run through them. However, they didn’t count on the tall and hard hitting number 3 from Oxford scoring an excellent 78. He had previously taken three Devon wickets in the first innings!
The match then ebbed and flowed in each side’s direction with runs and wickets coming a regular stages until the final over come with Oxford needing 2 runs to win with 2 wickets in hand. Oxford won the match with 5 balls to spare. The pick of Devon bowlers were Ben Green – Exeter CC (2 for 20), Dan Pyle – Otter St Mary and Ben Steer – Bovey Tracey CC even though they didn’t take a wicket they bowled very well.
As in the game against Somerset one player from the opposition did all the damage and extras was second top scorer by 30 runs! A good lesson learned for Devon and hopefully one they can correct before playing Wiltshire in the next fixture!
