It was a day to win the toss and have a bowl on a fairly wet and cold day for the first weekend of the District programme as nine out of the 11 confirmed results were won by the chasing side. The typically strong East sides faired well winning all of their games save for the Under 15 Girls side who lost out to an experienced South Devon U15 Girls outfit. It was a mixed bag for both the North and South who lost a few of their games but also came out on top in others, whilst the West will be looking to bounce back next week after not recording a victory in any of their games.
There were many standout performances over the weekend across the age groups and regions. Rebecca Halliday from the West Under 13 Girls scored the only hundred of the day as she notched up 104 against the North at Ivybridge CC. There were two five wicket hauls taken, both by South bowlers, the first of which was at Shaldon where it was the battle of the quicks. The South opening bowler, Archie Farkins, took 5-20, including a hat-trick, whilst the East opening bowler Oliver Sherwood almost matched him with 4-12. Meanwhile, Libby Ford ripped out the East U15 Girls middle order for the South at Ipplepen as she recorded figures of 5-10. The wickets continued to tumble across the girls games as Ciara O'Keefe (West) and Ellen Day (East) finished with some fantastic figures of 4-3 and 4-0 respectively.
There were some match winning parterships built on a tough weekend to bat, the highest of which was between Tom Lammonby (67*) and Sam Maunder (57*) of the East who put on 135 for the 2nd wicket against the South to take them to victory. The highest opening stand was between Madi Holifield (50ret) and Emma Seward (41), also from the East, who scored 107 to put the East into a strong position to secure a winning draw against the South. James Horler (50*) and Cameron Kidd (56*) had to pull their side out of trouble at Exmouth against North Devon, as they put on 83 for the 6th wicket to recover the situation from 80-5 to 163-5 to claim victory.
Elsewhere the spinners wreaked havoc as Harold Retallick (4-2) and Ben Abrahams (4-36) helped secure victory for their respective teams, whilst Kazi Szymanski made a solid 63 for the South Under 15s, albeit in vein as they lost out at Thorverton. The biggest win of the weekend went to the South U12s as they smashed their way to 226 off 44 overs thanks to many batsmen chipping in before bowling the North out for 120 to end the day with a 106 run win.
Next week the Under 15s have a week off as the Under 14s competition begins, and the East and West Under 12 sides also start off their District campaigns. On the Bank Holiday Monday the traditional U10 Festival takes place at Bideford Cricket Club.
