Jamie and Craig Overton with Andy Davies (centre) and some of the U9 hopefuls trying out for the team
SOMERSET stars Craig and Jamie Overton dropped in to help out at the North Devon District U9s trial held at Bideford's Westward Ho! ground.
Boys from Bideford, North Devon CC, Braunton and Filleigh had a try-out for the District team, not to be confused with the club side based at Instow.
Trial organiser Andy Davies only had one problem: he didn’t have any umpires. All the usual ‘suspects’ were either playing themselves or were busy.
In desperation Davies phoned North Devon CC official Mark Overton, asking if he knew anyone who could help.
Mark offered the services of twins Craig and Jamie to umpire the match.
So, less than 24 hours after the twins were playing First Class cricket for Somerset, doing their best to bowl out the Surrey tail-enders at the Oval, they were umpiring the North Devon District Under 9s trial match at Westward Ho!
They only had a single day off as they are both were the squad for this week’s programme of matches with Somerset.
“I am delighted Craig and Jamie answered my SoS call for umpires,” said Davies.
“It was a very exciting surprise and inspirational for the youngsters to meet genuine First Class cricketers and have them umpire their own match, especially as they themselves were North Devon colts.
“It's a day the U 9s will probably never forget and I thank Jamie and Craig for giving up their Sunday afternoon at such short notice.”
The trial match was in preparation for the U9s’ District Festival at Westward Ho! on Bank Holiday Monday (June 4). Teams representing North Devon, South Devon, West Devon and East Devon will be taking part.
