D DIVISION
IPPLEPEN extended their D Division lead to 39 points with a comprehensive victory at home to Whimple.
The visitors were bowled out for 136, twice as many as they had made in the first meeting this term, but that was again not enough to trouble the table toppers who lost just one wicket with Joe Abbott (66no) and Luke Tuckett (19no) seeing them home after Dave Harris (46) became the only home batsmen to lose his wicket. Earlier, only Chris Palfrey (50) and Will Cleal (25) were able to make any sort of progress as Keith Wakeham (4-40), Paul Thomas (3-28) and Andy Mason (3-22) claimed wickets.
Whimple will be glad they won’t be facing Ipplepen in a hurry.
The D Division champions elect dished out a second heavy defeat of the season on Jono Burden's men.
When the pair met at Whimple earlier in the campaign Whimple were rolled over for 65 to lose by 156 runs. This time they managed double that with a total of 136 but, batting first, that was never going to trouble Ipplepen who hurried to a nine wicket win.
Chris Palfrey hit 50 and Will Cleal struck 25 in the Whimple batting effort, Dave Chamberlain took the one home wicket to fall.
Ottery St Mary slipped up in their pursuit of the D Division leaders and are in danger of being caught by Feniton after they were forced to take a losing draw from a visit to Countess Wear. The Exeter side batted first and closed on 254-6. James Bogue top scored with 97 but was denied a century when he was bowled by Mark Woodman. Dave Travis struck a solid 69 and Kav Diaz also weighed in with a knock of 66. Woodman finished with 2-55 but the pick of the visiting bowlers was Will Harrison with 3-69. Sam Tennant then hit 70 in the reply but only James Faulkner with an unbeaten 43 and Jody Clements with 25 were also able to muster runs as Bogue completed a fine all-round effort with 4-66. Ottery finished on 208-6 and are now 39 points shy of the leaders with five games and a hundred points to play for.
Feniton were again denied by a set of bullish opposition batsmen and therefore unable to force a victory in their game against Whitchurch at Acland Park.
When the pair met earlier in the season Feniton, batting first, powered to 304-6 declared but could only bag five of the home wickets.
This time they again topped 300, closing on 316-6 but, once more Whitchurch denied them, ending on 207-7.
It was Rob Pfeiffer, batting at number seven, who was the Acland Park hero hitting a maiden league century, finishing unbeaten on 103. Skipper Mark Kingdon (83), Norman Bedford (42) and Jon Pyle (34no) also chipped in. Jon French then claimed 4-34 in the Whitchurch innings but Feniton were forced to settle for 14 points, although that was a four point gain the team immediately above them, second in the table Ottery St Mary who now hold a 34 point advantage with five games to play.
Kingdon said: “I had been looking to declare to give us extra overs at them but with Rob (Pfeiffer) so close to his first ever century in league cricket it seemed the right things to do to let him reach the landmark.”
On the promotion race, the Acland Park skipper said: “We got to Ottery on Saturday and so it has become very much last chance saloon if we are to catch them. If we were to win then it would open things up with 80 points still to play for.”
Halberton eased their relegation worries with a six wicket stroll at home to Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough who they restricted to 171-9 and then lost just four wickets closing out their fourth win of the season. Nigel Piddock (45), Dave Bayliss (43) and Jack Dent (41) chipped in to help the Plymouth side to their close. Paul Robins, a centurion when the Halberton won the game in Plymouth earlier in the season, was again at the fore front of the success as he claimed 5-30 and Fred Harding took 3-47.
Tom Sambrook hit an unbeaten 51 and, with knock of 25 from Kev Fever and an unbeaten 24 from Jeremy Turner, Halberton got home with plenty of wickets, and overs, to spare.
Yelverton are within 40 points of a promotion berth but are running out of games to play at a higher level next season.
They secured a fifth victory of the campaign with a six wicket home win over Bridestowe. The visitors batted first and scored 190-4 with Phil Hatton top scoring on 67 whilst Scott Tremain hit an unbeaten 47. Dom Rushden (1-17) and Ian Cunningham (1-31) served up the best of the bowling figures for the hosts who got home with seven overs to spare at 196-4. Opener Will Chapman led them on their way with 55 but it was number four bat Rob Bennett struck the top score of 61. M Butler claimed 2-34 in 4.5 overs for the hosts.
