D DIVISION
IPPLEPEN are the new leaders of the D Division after they were eight wicket home winners over Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough.
Only Andy Hawker (34) made much impression as the visitors were bowled out for 161 with Joe Abbot (3-22_ and Paul Thomas (3-27) claiming the bulk of the wickets. Luke Tuckett then hit 71, putting on 143 for the second wicket with Abbot (62no) as the home side cantered to victory.
Ottery’s perfect start was ended when they were forced to settle for a losing draw at Halberton & Sampford Peverell.
The home side batted first and posted a very respectable 239-8. Paul Robins top scored with 70 and there was a fine knock to from Kev Fever (55).
Nick Dowman (3-51) was the pick of the visiting bowlers.
Mark Woodman then hit an unbeaten 46 but only Rob Johns (32) also troubled the scorers for too long as the Otters’ reply ran out of steam at 202-7.
Countess Wear were another home side to win at a canter as they put bottom-of-the-table Bridestowe to the sword.
Batting first, the basement dwellers were bundled out for 106 with only Phil Hatton (32) making any impression with the bat as Alex Layer (3-40), Mark Davey (3-24) and Kam Diaz (2-1), claiming wickets.
Peter Darke then hit an unbeaten 43 and Davey chipped in with 23 to go with his early trio of wickets as the Exeter side eased home for the loss of just three wickets.
Whimple claimed a second successive victory but it was close call, as they scrambled to a single-wicket win at Feniton.
The Acland Park side, without skipper Mark Kingdon who became a proud father in the early hours of the day, laboured to 141 thanks to Phil Hope’s (4-41) and visiting skipper Jono Burden (3-43).
After seeming to ease their way towards victory there was a dramatic Whimple middle order collapse and then three more wickets fell in the final couple of overs but Matt Richards and Hope nudged their side over the winning line for a thrilling single wicket win.
Whimple skipper Burden said: “I am delighted. We really showed tremendous character, and not for the first time, as we were, at one point, in grave danger of undoing all the hard work we had done to rol them over for less than 150.
“I am so pleased with the early season progress, this campaign offers us much if we can maintain this sort of consistency and character.”
Feniton skipper, the proud new dad Kingdon said: “Scoring such a meagre total on our track is never going to be leading us to a win and it seems we need to find a greater level of consistency with our bats.”
The game at Yelverton ended mighty close to 8.30pm with visiting Whitchurch closing on a stubborn 176-4 in reply to the home offering of 243-9. Batting first, the hosts were indebted to 81 from Rich West and 54 from Rob Bennett for the bulk of their uns. Dave Sambells (4-56) and Josh Meadows (3-37) were the principle visiting wicket takers. Martyn Credicott then hit a half century in the reply whilst Ian Cunningham bagged a brace of wickets.
