D Division: Pens forge on at top

D DIVISION

IPPLEPEN made it six wins from six at the top of the table - and just three dropped points from 120 - after a 65-run win at Countess Wear.

Joe Abbot (81) and Luke Tuckett (49) combined to see Pens to 187-8.

Kam Singh took 4-21 and got good support from Carl Downes (2-24).

However, James Rowe (36) and Pete Darke (24) apart, no other Countess Wear batsman got going.

Pens’ Kiwi spinner Andy Mason claimed 6-12 in 13 overs as the reply floundered on 122.

Wear skipper Harkness said: “Credit where it is due, they (Ipplepen) are a very good side and their spinner is right up there with the best of them at this level – and probably a level or two higher.

“We bowled and fielded very well to restrict them to what looked a gettable target.

“It may well have been a target we could chase down – but then they had the chap Mason!”

Ottery, trying to keep pace with Ipplepen, are the only other side in the D Division yet to be beaten.

They banked 14 points from a winning draw in a rain-hit game against Plymouth Civil Service & Roborough.

The Otters bated first and closed on 153-8 led there by Alex Clements (47no), Jody Clements (33) and Mark Woodman (28).

Jack Dent took 4-49 for the visitors, who then laboured their way to a close of 127-8. Greg Bridgett top scored with 51 and Dave Bayliss weighted in with 25.

Former Devon medium pacer Woodman completed a fine all-round shift for the Otters with 5-14 from 11 splendid overs.

Halberton’s Paul Robins clubbed half a dozen sixes in an unbeaten knock of 113 to lead the mid-Devon side to a seven-wicket home win over a Whitchurch side that slipped to the bottom of the table.

Richard Hall (30) was the only visiting batsmen to make runs at Sampford Peverell; as Jez Turner claimed 3-38 and Fred Harding took 3-42.

Robins then took centre stage cracking a magnificent century. The other not-out batsman at the close was teenager Connor Carthew, who made 13 on his debut after joining the club from another Mid Devon outfit, Cullompton.

Whimple slumped to a third successive D Division defeat leaving skipper Jono Burden fuming.

“We were dreadful; actually we were not even that good. It was as bad an all-round show as you can get.

We did not bowl well, fielded poorly and then batted abysmally.

The attitude throughout the team was simply not even close to being acceptable and heads will roll. Changes simply have to be made after that collective garbage!”

Phil Woods (70) and Scott Tremayne (51) led the visiting side to a close of 208-6 with Phil Hope (2-40) and skipper Burden (2-25) the only wicket takers of note.

The reply was troubled from the off with only Trevor Griffin (16) making any sort of impression, Phil Hatton claimed 3-10 as the home side were bundled out for a meagre 83.

Burden said: “Putting them in on a green wicket was a shoe-in for our bowlers to get out and enjoy themselves but the opposite happened.

“Some of the bowling was dreadful, much more of it was worse than that! Then, just as I thought the day could not get any worse we served up such an unacceptable effort with the bat.

“It’s not even a performance I feel I can simply put down as a bad day at the office because we were so poor and that’s three successive defeats now for a side who could, and should, be doing much better than that.”

Feniton claimed the greater share of the points from a winning draw in a close encounter at Acland Park against Yelverton.

A heavy lunchtime shower made batting very difficult and Feniton did well to make their way to 196-9.

Skipper Mark Kingdon top scored with 53 whilst Graham Tucker (27), Norman Bedford (22) and Martin Swannell (21), provided the best of the supporting acts. Geoff Brain took 4-52 for the visitors, who took the run chase right to the wire with Rob Bennett top scoring on 75.

Needing two to win off the last delivery, bowled by Jonathan French, the ball was chipped to third man where Russ Whitton held a catch to leave Yelverton finishing on 194-9.

That last ball wicket sealed a five for 45 haul for French in his very first game of the season!

Skipper Mark Kingdon said: “It was a cracking game to be involved in. In the balance right to the end and fair play to them (Yelverton) for sticking at the run chase when other’s may have wavered.

“It was tough batting after the lunchtime rain but I was pleased with our application and felt that the 196 was a very competitive total.

“It’s great to have Jonathan (French) back in the swing of things, he bowled very well and richly deserved to come off with five wickets.”
