SAM Stein was the star of the show with a six-wicket haul as a strong Devon Dumplings’ side scraped a one-run win over Blundell’s School.
Liam Lewis, a former captain of the 1st XI at Blundell’s, made a top score of 75 not out in the Dumplings’ total of 176 for four declared.
Exmouh and Devon player Chris Metters was an early casualty when the Dumplings batted, he was caught behind for two, but surviving opener Luke Jury (Plymouth) and Lewis put on 34 without mishap.
Matt Goss produced a big in-swinger that removed Jury, paving the way for Exeter’s veteran left-hander Glenn Lammonby to join Lewis in the middle. Lammonby kept an end going for 38 of 77 balls in a stand of 109 with Lewis.
Smart glovework by Jack Maunder off David Penberthy accounted for Lammonby with a couple of overs to go
Dumplings’ president Richard Pyle clattered a quick 14 at the end in a stand of 30 with Lewis before the declaration.
Skipper Conrad Sutcliffe’s declaration looked more than generous when the School were 98 for one with around 20 overs batting time left.
Harry McDowell, with three sixes and six fours on his way to 59 and Sidmouth’s Zak Bess (330 were well on top of the Dumplings’ bowling.
Lewis and Exmouth captain Richard Baggs (2-42) swung the game towards the Dumplings with three quick wickets as the school dipped to 99 for four. Plymouth paceman Stein, wicketless in his first spell, came back up the hill this time and kept the pressure on with a wicket in each of his next four overs.
At 129 for seven it looked like an easy win for the Dumplings was on the cards. The School’s tail-enders had other ideas.
Matt Hague (29no) marshalled the tail as the ninth pair put on 32. Stein had Williams caught behind by Jury, which left 16 to win or one wicket to get, depending on which side you were following.
Hague and last man Gary Abdul had whittled the target down to two to win when Stein snared Abdul lbw.
Stein finished with six for 57 in the match and six for 38 in his second spell as the Dumplings preserved their winning sequence for the season.
The Dumplings next game is this Thursday when they play a re-arranged game against Hampshire side Whitchurch at Bradninch (11.30am)
