Bess blasts 79 as Blundells beat Dumplings

MAY 18, 2011

ZAK Bess thumped a match-winning 79 as Blundell’s School defeated the Devon Dumplings by three wickets in a nail-biting game.

The Dumplings put out a strong side containing seven players regularly performing for 1st XIs in the Premier and A Division of the Devon Cricket League.

Dumplings were in all sorts of disarray at first after slumping to 14 for three after eight overs with Chris Kelmere, Graham White and Liam Lewis all out cheaply.

A stand of 117 between left-handers Glenn Lammonby (68) and Chris Small (58) got the Dumplngs off the hook.

A brilliant, one-handed catch on the boundary by Barney Goss off the bowling of Matt Hague broke the partnership by removing Small.

Lammonby went 14 runs later, but the bottom half of the order kept going to the end with Richard Ashworth making 17 and Callum Still 24 towards a final total of 201 for seven.

Hague with three for 31 was the pick of the bowlers while Dylan Penberthy took two for 52.

The School’s reply could not have been more different as they raced to 53 for one in eight overs – Goss the man out for 20 – then on to 99 for three at the halfway stage in the 30-over game. Ned Menheneott had been and gone for a quickfire 42 by then.

Bess, who clouted six-fours and seven sixes over the short leg-side boundary on the Heathcoat ground, looked like winning it single-handed until Pete Hensor got him out.

Bess clearly impressed Devon’ CCCs director of cricket Roger Newman, who promptly asked him to play in tonight’s Devon Lions’ T20 game against Oxford University at Budleigh Salterton (4.30pm).

When the School were 175 for seven with three overs to go and Bess now back in the pavilion, the Dumplings sensed victory.

It wasn’t to be. Tom Ansell (23no) and Ben Hancock (5) got the School over the finishing line with four balls to go in the last over.

Kelmere took three wickets for 50 runs and executed a run-out when the Dumplings bowled.

   Devon Dumplings 201-7 (G Lammonby 68, C Small 58, C Still 24; M Hague 3-31, D Penberthy 2-52), Blundell’s School 1st XI 202-7 (Z Bess 79, N Menheneott 42, T Ansell 23; C Kelmere 3-50). Blundell’s bt Dumplings by 3 wkts.
