LATE withdrawals and availability problems for both teams led to the 40-over game between the Dumplings and touring Denstone Wanderers at Bradninch being an eight-a-side affair.
The shortage of fielders and the short boundaries suggested a batsman’s game, and so it proved as Denstone, despite the loss of an early wicket at 18, scored freely, reaching 200 for just two wickets by the 27th over.
The third wicket fell at 278 but the rapid fall of the next four wickets produced an all-out (7 down) total of 313, Luke Cheadle with 122 and S Bamford (81) and S Bamford (43) were the main contributors with the bat and the Dumplings helped by conceding 54 extras, predominantly in wides.
For the Dumplings, Shaun Nowak took two for 40, Harry Kampdampully had three for 92 in just nine overs and Arron Hearn finished with two for 24. The 24th and 27th overs went for 24 and 26 runs, respectively.
After the tea interval. prolonged by rain, the Dumplings scored rapidly from the start with the first wicket, that of Nowak for 50, falling at 84 after only six overs.
Keith Barlow contrived to get himself out caught and bowled first ball and so missed out on the subsequent run-fest.
After Jake Luffman was out for 41 in the eighth over, Harry Kampdampully (94 not out) and Chris Kelmere (106 not out) amassed an unbroken stand of 207 in 18 overs.
The Dumplings reached the victory target of 314 in the 27th over with just three wickets down. Denstone bowling honours went to captain Mike Snow who took all three wickets but conceded a century, finishing with three for 116 of his 10 overs.
