THE Devon Dumplings winning sequence continued when they defeated the Old Grammarians by four wickets in a 40-over game at Torquay.Joe Thompson hit an undefeated 143 as the Old Boys – all from Torquay Boys’ Grammar School – made 246 for five.
Luke Jury hit 71 and there were knocks of 48 from Joe Cunningham and Keith Barlow as the runs were knocked off with three and a half overs to spare.
Thompson and Matt Hickey shared the stand-out partnership of 105 for the Old Boys, which pulled them round after a couple of early strikes from Sam Stein (3-53) had them looking listless at 28 for two.
Thompson thumped 14 fours and five sixes from 142 balls – reaching his century with a huge six over long-on off the bowling of Pavi Mawalage. Stein, who had bowled tidily for seven overs, was taken apart in the last one as Thompson hit him for six, two, six, four, four to close the innings.
Henry Burningham, the former South Devon captain, made 26 in a partnership worth exactly 80 with Thompson for the fourth wicket.
The Dumplings lost Exeter’s Aaron Williams in the second over, caught and bowled by Carl Woolnough (2-23). County Ground clubmate Graham White went on 40 having made 19.
Jury and Joe Cunningham got the score up to 112 and when Jury was caught behind off Ben Passenger (2-38) the Dumplings needed to score at nearly seven an over in the last 19 to win the game.
While Cunningham shored up one end, his 48 came off 75 balls, Exeter’s Will Steward (30) and Barlow got on with it at the other.
Barlow only faced 19 balls and deployed the pull shot to good effect to hit most of his five boundaries.
Gamini Kumara (22no), South Devon’s Sri Lankan overseas star, was in at the end when fellow countryman Pavi Mawalage fired the winning boundary.
The Dumplings will be aiming to make it four wins on the bounce when they face Blundell’s School 1st XI next Wednesday.
