FOUR byes in the last over was the anti-climactic finish to the Devon Dumplings’ two-wicket win at Kelly College.
Having won the toss and opted to bat, the College failed to take advantage and slipped to 66 for five.
James McGahey and Joe Murphy bowled well for the Dumplings and with an unnecessary run out, the College found themselves in some disarray.
John Elliott (74) batted sensibly with able support of Ben Turner (47) and 88 runs were scored before a further wicket fell.
The boys went on to total 194 all out in 41 overs. College head, Graham Hawley bowled his chinamen to good effect and finished with three for 32 in 10 overs. James McGahey got three for 30.
When the Dumplings went in a number of batsmen made a start and then got themselves out. David Manning threatened to cut loose but miscued and was caught at deep-square leg.
James McGahey (37) batted well, partnered by veteran Nigel Sawrey-Cookson (30) as the scoring rate accelerated.
James McGahey was followed by father John (30) and the Dumplings appeared to be cruising.
However, when the fifth wicket fell at 144 the College began to claw their way back into the game. With the tension mounting, five runs were needed off the last over with two wickets remaining.
Four byes from the penultimate ball did the trick.
