Romans' conquest

THE Devon Dumplings continued their impressive start to the season with a comfortable six-wicket victory over touring Wye Rustics at Exeter’s County Ground.

   Winning the toss and batting first the Rustics dawdled to 81 for threee in 35 overs before the lunch break, only Robert Pinney (30) showing any aggression. 

   Jack Nell raised the tempo after lunch with a brisk 64 but it took the Rustics 60 overs to reach their all-out total of 228. 

   Wickets were shared among three Dumplings bowlers with Ross Knoll grabbing 4-21 and Sam Stein (2-9) and Nick James (3-67) giving good support.

   The Dumplings lost Graham White for 21 in the eighth over. But Gareth Tidball hit 12 fours in his 63 and Hugh Roberts smacked three sixes and eight fours in making 64 as the innings gained momentum.

   Hugh Romans, who also hit three sixes, then took over to propel the Dumplings to their winning target of 231 for just 4 wickets with almost 10 of the final 20 overs remaining.

   The Dumplings have won six out of their eight games this season and remain unbeaten.

   Wye Rustics 228 (J Nell 64, R Pinney 30, Knoll 4-21, James 3-67, Stein 2-9)

   Devon Dumplings 231 or 4 (Jones 64, G Tidball 63, Romans 56, Nell 2-29). Dumplings won by 6 wickets.
