DEVON Dumplings beat old neighbours and rivals the Somerset Stragglers by a convincing eight wickets in a 40-over match at Shobrooke Park.
Stragglers won the toss and chose to bat, but never fully settled to the task with a number of batsmen getting themselves out to over-ambitious shots.
Four got starts - G Laing 37, S Laing 25, A Clark 26 and W Penny 23 - but nobody went on to post a serious total and Stragglers were dismissed for 177 in 38.3 overs.
The wickets were shared around with four students taking two apiece. They were Steve Miles, Arron Hearn, Charlie Neilson and Jack Cherrington.
Debutant Mark Phillips - not that one - took two good catches either side of a finger dislocation, which allowed the match manager to prove useful by practising his medical dark arts!
Openers Byron Kennedy and Dominic Tuohey got Dumplings off to a fine start before Tuohey was dismissed for 36.
Kennedy continued with debutants Justin Dollow and Ross Knoll bringing up his unbeaten century and the winning total with his final four runs in a classy102 not out.
Dumplings had 9.3 overs to spare.
Match manager Peter Jolliffe was grateful for the assistance of Hatherleigh and Abbotskerswell CCs who provided five talented young players between them.
Other clubs who wish to put forward good young players for consideration should contact any club official via the links on the Devon Cricket website.
