DEVON Dumplings chased 303 to win against the touring Sou’westers on a scorching day at Exeter.
The Dumplings got home in the penultimate over for the loss of only four wickets.
Dominic Tuohey (73) and Mike Wilkinson (89) put on 168 for the first wicket and Abbotskerswell youngsters Richard Ashworth (41) and Chris Kelmere (66no) added 93 for the fourth wicket.
As the run rate rose through the last 20 overs of the game, the last two overs arrived with 16 needed to win. Kelmere won the game in four hits!
Sou’Westers, who won the toss and batted, took the Dumplings for 196 for three at lunch and under the cosh.
Earlier, having lost the toss, we were under the cosh, going into lunch with the Souwesters on 196 for three.
Opening bowlers Danny Johnson (9-0-38-1) and Henry Thompson (6-0-40-1) bowled well but the pitch was slow and even and did not give much help to the seamers.
Young spinners Kelmere and Will Wells gave some more control but a lightning fast outfield saw the runs piling on, although Stenning broke through with the last ball of before lunch.
After lunch Tuohey and Stenning (3-39) stemmed the run flow. With the help of two suicidal run-outs only 30 runs were scored for the next four wickets.
The Sou’westers’ eighth-wicket pair pushed the score along again till two more wickets fell including another daft run out.
The last pair held on and they declared having passed 300.
