D DIVISION WEST
KINGSKERSWELL continued their impressive start to the season with a fifth consecutive victory, this time over visiting Ashburton.
The game was important because Kingskerswell were in first place in the League with Ashburton just behind them in second.
Despite losing the toss Ashburton made a more than useful start by putting on 99 for the first wicket with George Marshall (39) and Kevin Cock (41) both in good touch.
Ashburton would have been eyeing a score of around 200 having reached 99 for no loss with around 16 overs still to bat.
However Chris Hurrell (4-46), and father Richard (2-19), intervened and suddenly Ashburton lost three wickets for three runs.
From then on there was a steady procession of batsmen back to the Pavilion as the Ashburton innings subsided to 157 all out. Eric Gregerson 3-8 polished off the rest.
Russ Lacey (24) kept things alive but the final total should have been much more
The most impressive feature about the Ashburton innings, other than the opening partnership, was Kingskerswell’s fielding - nine catches and a run out.
In response Kingskerswell never looked in any trouble whatsoever with Steve Waters (54no) and Mike Etherington (53) putting on 84 for the first wicket.
Erik Gregersen struck a brisk 34 not out to complete an emphatic victory by nine wickets with 14 overs to spare.
Ashburton’s Matt Coon (1-36) bowled beautifully without much luck.
Luke Jeffery (0-24) made life very uncomfortable for the batsmen, as he produced some life from the pitch.
DARTINGTON & Totnes 2nd XI pulled off a remarkable victory over Torquay in a game that seemed to have got away from them in the first few overs
Torquay reduced D&T to three for three – Anthony Nadar (3-27) doing most of the damage – and 29 for five after Josh Hunt got in on the act was no real improvement.
As Terry King (4-27) started running through the D&T middle order, Jono Colegate (33) the only batter to resist for long, a Torquay win seemed assured.
When last man Chris Worth came out to join Mick Rusling, few people on the ground thought they would still be there 12 overs later.
From 95 for nine Worth (27no) and Rusling (17) got the score up to 137 without further loss - a stand that proved decisive.
For Torquay were bowled out for 93 in reply and lost by 44 runs.
Torquay played too many shots when they batted and smart fielding by D&T did the rest.
The tone was set by a catch on the boundary by Mike Jarvis to dismiss James Fulner for 16.
Rusling (3-22) caught and bowled Joe Crooks for 22 – and Jarvis produced a wonder catch one-handed to dispatch Aaron Stevenson.
Liam Cotton (2-24) and Dave Carter wrapped up the tail-enders to send Torquay spiralling to defeat.
Cockington’s old warhorse Brian Burrows was among the wickets for Cockington when they lost to Plympton 3rd XI.
Burrows – 69 and still wheeling away – took four for 39 as he and Graham Furze (3-49) finally got Plympton all out for 248.
Cockington were bowled out for 111 in reply – Sean Mortimer (6-19) and Jamie Howarth (3-23) doing the damage. Furze made 27.
Chagford slipped to a 58-run defeat chasing 203 to win against second-placed Lewdown.
Oliver Brown belted 111 in Lewdown’s tally of 202 for nine.
Gary (46) and Steve Sizmur (37) were the only Chagford batters to make much headway in a total of 144 all out.
Neil Tamblin (5-29) bowled Whitchurch (113-9) to a 27-run win over Plymouth (86) in a low-scoring affair.
