D & E East round-up

D EAST

Whimple II recorded a thrilling penultimate over three wicket home victory over Kentisbeare.

Alex Evens claimed 3-52 in eleven overs and Jon Bardot bowled far batter than figures of 1-64 suggest as the Mid Devon side closed on 230-6.

The run chase was timed to perfection led by Steve Palfrey with 84 whilst Grant Northover was unbeaten on 65 with Matt Brown at the other not out batsman as the winning line was crossed with one over to go.

Whimple travel to Exmouth III on Saturday.

It was bitter sweet for the Upottery cricketers back at their Sidmouth Arms headquarters on Saturday night for the 2nd XI could not emulate their senior side’s endeavours as they lost a close affair at home to Feniton II beaten by three runs.

The defeat was certainly harsh on Adam Crabb who emerged from the game with seven wickets and his side’s top scorer! C

rabb claimed 7-58, and with a brace of catches he had a hand in the first nine Feniton wickets to fall, the final one going down on 119.

Skipper Francis Pyle led from the front with his side’s top score of 39 as wickets tumbled around him.

Crabb then hit 24 and Graham Pidgeon struck 22 but Kev Brandon then took over with the ball, claiming 4-22 as the home side were bowled out for 116.

Skipper Dan Prettejohn said: “The less said about the outcome of the game the better. We did all the hard work in bowling them out for a very gettable total and then undid all the good work with a disappointing batting display. Still there’s always the next game!”

No joy for the Axminster 2nd XI, but they did put up a sterling effort against all-conquering Exeter III who eventually claimed a four wicket win.

Sam Dibling (26), Bradley Cross (16) and Danny Bicknell (16) provided the bulk of the runs in a total of 123. Dave Gadsden then claimed 3-52 as the visitors got home on 124-6.

On Saturday the 2nd XI make the short trip to Uplyme and Lyme Regis.

E EAST

Kilmington 2nd XI were denied victory by a stubborn Axminster III side.

Skipper Ash Cook (53) and knocks of 49no by Jim Smart and 47 from Graham Watts led Kilmington to 234-8. Axminster then laboured their way though their overs to a close of 119-5.

Peter Lawson hit an unbeaten 56 and Emily Broad struck 17 after she had also claimed 3-36.

Kilmington skipper Ash Cook lamented: “It was not very inspiring cricket. We batted well, but then could not take sufficient wickets, hard to do against such defensive batting.”

Kilmington are third in the E Division East 2nd XI table and next up they travel to Cullompton II who sit three places and 21 points worse off in the table.
