Uplyme will be promoted if they secure at least 11 points in their game at bottom of the table Tiverton and Bickleigh on the penultimate match day of the season.
They were banking 15-points from a wining home draw with Whitchurch whilst Kentisbeare’s hopes took a nose dive when they were forced to settle for a losing draw at home to Kilmington.
Adam Caddy, brother of the skipper, top scored with 65 and Steve Batey chipped in with 45 as maximum batting points were nailed with the innings closing on 206-8.
The skipper then claimed 2-18 whilst brother Adam took 2-32.
Caddy said: “We are very close now, but I want to go up as champions and want us to keep playing the sort of cricket we are serving up in the last two.
“Clearly this coming weekend is a pivotal one with Shaldon going to Kentisbeare, they both can’t win that one, so, as long was we do our work correctly at Tiverton and Bickleigh we may well have a much clearer picture of the end game this Saturday night.”
Tom Gooding was Kentisbeare’s nemesis. The Kilmington all-rounder scored 111 in his sides 247 and then claimed 5-62 as the Kents’ were restricted to 240-9 in the reply. Harry Howe had a day to remember as he claimed 7-32 for the Mid Devon men and also took a hat-trick – a feat matched by older brother Martin for the club’s 2nd XI on the same day!
Neil Farley (90) and skipper Scott Chappell (56) also chipped in for the home side.
Shaldon closed to within three points of the table toppers with a maximum point’s win at home to relegation threatened Upottery.
Jamie Day (52), Mark Couch (51) and Todd Bulman (37) made the bulk of the runs in a home total of 223-6.
Dan Broom and Gary Kennard both bagged a brace of wickets for the East Devon side, who were then bowled out for 142 with only Matthew Button-Stephens (25) and 38 extras making much of an impression in the score book.
Couch completed yet another match winning all-round effort with 6-38.
Tiverton and Bickleigh did their chances of avoiding the drop a whole host of good with a maximum point’s haul at home to fellow strugglers Topsham St James.
Phil Hubbard (49), Jason Parr (44) and Ben Schofield (33) all chipped in towards a total of 204.
Skipper Ross Treleaven took 4-48 and Nick Horne weighed in with 3-45 for the Saints who were then bundled out for 92. It would have been far, far worse but for the last pair who came together at 33-9!
Alex Sparkes (48) and Rhys Beauchamp (6no) were the pair who nailed a new Topsham St James club record for the final wicket with a partnership of 59.
Kenn landed a winning draw from the visit of Bridestowe. Faulk Koehler (85) and Harry Gayden (27) led the Exeter side to 187-9.
Alex Joplin (3-30) and Dan Fogarty (3-42) claimed wickets for Bridestowe, who replied with 178-8 led there by Phil Woods (56) and John Hatton (37).
