E DIVISION
BABBACOMBE’S problems at the wrong end of the E Division continued when they threw away a winning position at home to Kilmington.
Marcus Thompson took five Kilmington wickets for 16 runs on his first appearance this season as the visitors were shot out for 123.
Rob Cook (38no), Tom Gooding (16), Graham Watts (13) and Dave Cook (13) all made contributions to the visitors’ cause.
Babbacombe set off on what looked a routine run chase, but then they felt the full force of Keith Rockett.
The former Axminster captain rolled back the years to deliver a devastating spell of bowling. From 11.4 overs, four of which were maidens, he returned splendid figures of 6-15.
Skipper Maurice Beviss also kept it tight his end with two for 11 off 11.
The combination of Rocket and Beavis meant the reply lasted just 25 overs. When the final wicket fell, the score board read 32 and Babbacombe had lost by 91 runs.
A delighted Beviss said: “It was certainly a bad toss to lose but then we dug deep and did very well to post a competitive score in such difficult conditions.
“If the batting effort was first class, then the bowling and support fielding was out of the top drawer.
“Keith (Rockett) was sensational and we thoroughly deserved to return with the victory.”
Defeat leaves Babbacombe 22 points below the safety mark in the table and desperate to beat fellow strugglers Woodbury this Saturday.
Skipper Paul Bates said the team’s problem was that batsmen are not occupying the crease.
“Despite some stubborn resistance from Marcus Tanton who batted nearly 20 overs for his 10, nobody in the team was able stay in long enough to get us close,” said Bates.
“Thankfully, we are taking wickets, which is keeping our heads above the water points-wise. But we need to bat our overs and start doing it consistently from next week.
“Woodbury is a massive game for us. We must win, it is as simple as that.”
Filleigh moved up into second spot after they cruised to a seven-wicket win over under-strength Kentisbeare.
Kents were decimated by a wedding and did well with the bat to muster 150-9 led there by Rob Tinley (55no) as Gary Henry (4-22) and Ryan Bowden (3-55) claimed wickets. Mark Prideaux (44no) and Simon Prideaux (28no) then saw the visitors to victory.
Kenn were bowled out for just 132 at Woodbury but that proved sufficient to land them a 76 run victory!
James Dowd (60) provided the bulk of the Kenn total as Martin Cook claimed 6-44 in 13 overs and Ian Hughes weighed in with 3-26.
Then Stuart Wonnacott put the ball consistently on the spot to claimed 7-18 in ten overs as Woodbury were bowled out for 56 with only Tim Greenslade (12) and Martin Cook (11no) into double figures.
