EXETER’S veteran seam bowler Jon Tipper has his sights set on a regular 1st XI place again – 25 years after making his debut as a teenager.
Tipper – 41 next birthday – could be said to have done his bit for the County Ground side after two stints as captain and more than 20 years in the 1st XI.
He has been playing quite happily in the second team for the past few seasons having handed over the reins to Miles Lenygon.
Lenygon asked Tipper to go on standby this season for 1st XI action – and after a five-wicket return against Paignton last Saturday he is eager for more!
“Miles spoke to me pre-season and said I might be needed in the 1st XI and to consider myself part of the squad,” said Tipper.
“That was the incentive to get a bit fitter and pre-season I felt the ball was coming out okay.
“We were light in the bowling department against Paignton so there was an opportunity to play.
“Taking five wickets was a bonus, although to be fair one of them was caught on the boundary.
“Now I have got the taste for it again and want to play in the 1st XI if I can.”
Tipper is hoping to be retained for the game at Bovey Tracey on Saturday, not just because of his five-wicket haul against Paignton.
“The pitch down there suits the way I bowl and it is a game I could do a good job in,” said Tipper.
Tipper said what he would not want to do at this stage of his career is block a younger player coming through.
“We have lots of exciting, young players coming through like Ben Green, Ollie Sale and Tom Lammonby,” said Tipper.
“The last thing I would want to do is get in their way, not that I can see that happening.
“Miles knows I am there if needed and keen to do a job.”
Tipper stays in against Bovey, Tom Barton is back as is Zac Bess.
Tom Richardson is out through injury and George Greenway as an outing with the 2nd XI.
