Cricket Festival chaos goes down a storm!

Exeter Primary School Cricket Festival 2015 – writes Matt Cooke

34 Teams - 17 pictures - 11 Exeter Primary Schools -  272 Children Playing

THESE are just some of the headlines to come from this years Exeter Primary School Cricket Festival held at Topsham St James cricket club on June 9.

With teams competing in groups of four playing schools from all over the city it was certainly a sight to behold all at the picturesque Topsham ground.

Schools were encouraged to bring as many teams as possible, with some schools in particular St Leonards Primary School & St Sidwells Primary managing to bring six and seven teams respectively.

Boys and girls aged 10/11 all running around, batting, bowling, fielding and enjoying the game was a great advert for cricket.

Competition points worked on an average points basis so it's fair across the board and meant that teams had to spread out their ‘best players’ through all of their teams.

After the four rounds of matches St Michaels Catholic Primary and Whipton Barton Primary came out at the top o

f the point’s table.

Both teams won the competition both going away with an Ashes Urn and bag of cricket kit as their prize.

Three sides all drew for second place these being Bowhill Primary Stoke Hill Primary and Montgomery Primary also received a bag of kit for their efforts during the day.

For Devon cricket it however is not about the winning and losing of the day, it's all about the taking part and seeing more children enjoying playing cricket within the city.

It would be fantastic to see these children now go away and start playing in club environments and playing cricket more regularly in teams.

Some thank-you’s go out to Topsham St James Cricket Club for hosting the day the members of staff who kindly scored and umpired all of the games on the day and also the final thank you to Chance to Shine or for whom without their continuous support of the programs in Devon the day would never have happened at all.

Schools who took part: (St Sidwells, St Leonards, Whipton Barton, Clyst St Mary, Montgomery, St Thomas, St Michaels, St Nicholas, Topsham, and Bowhill)
