THE only thing Exmouth can do to improve on last season is win the Premier title in 2013.
No one has won the title more often than Exmouth, who have done it ten times since their first success in 1981.
They are a patient lot down Exmouth way, but it has been 13 years since they last lifted the title and the feeling is another one is overdue.
Skipper Richard Baggs is aiming to deliver the title this season, but readily admits his side face a still challenge from three or four rivals.
“Sidmouth won it last year and remain the team to beat,” said Baggs, whose side finished just three points behind the champs in second place.
“They had a decent side to start with and now Scott Barlow is back there and they look like having Adam Dibble from Somerset as well their bowling is strong.
“Bovey Tracey have strengthened – when don’t they? – and North Devon have picked up a few lads as well.
“Overall, it looks a stronger division than last year, but one I am sure we can be competitive in.”
Baggs hasn’t been idle during the winter, bringing in Devon pace bowler Mark Orchard (Brixham), Devon batsman Seb Benton (Paignton), former Bradninch captain and Devon one-day player Gary Chappell and ex-Devon keeper and vice-skipper Sandy Allen.
On the way after the season starts is seam bowler Vamshi Parthemeni, who is paying his own way over to gain experience of English conditions.
Gone from last seasons squad are early order batsmen Max Curtis and Barney Huxtable (both North Devon), Phil Anning (Shobrooke Park) and Rhys Davies (Tavistock).
“When I look down the team-sheet the side has a nicely balanced look to it,” said Baggs.
“With the bowling we have got – that includes the new recruits as well as what we had already – we are well equipped for the 50-over win-lose format.
“If we are not up there challenging I will want to know the reason why?”
