Exeter rest Green for Heathcoat game

MATT Hicks comes into Exeter’s otherwise unchanged side for the meeting with Heathcoat at the County Ground.

Hicks missed the controversial defeat at North Devon last time out, but comes into the side for Engladn U17 prospect Ben Green.

“We have given Ben some time off to focus on his exams,” said Exeter slipper Miles Lenygon.

Exeter saw a likely victory snatched from their grasp at North Devon, where a

run-out changed the course of the game.

Max Curtis made a maiden Premier Division century as North Devon posted 230 for six in 50 overs.

Curtis went in at 35 for two and batted through, sharing significant stands of 32 with Tom Allin and 88 with Jason Hayes (38).

Ben Green led the Exeter wicket-taking effort with four for 40 while spinner Adam Gribble had remarkable figures of nine runs from 10 overs – five of them maidens.

Exeter were 142 for five in reply with opener Andrew Curtis unbeaten on 81 when controversy struck.

Curtis, who had already been warned twice for creeping out of his ground before the bowler had delivered the ball, was run-out by North Devon’s Rob Gear.

North Devon’s Tom Allin has been cautioned about a similar practice in the first innings.

Sean Morris went on to make 32, but without Curtis to lead the way Exeter lost momentum.

Allin (4-42) picked up three wickets – George Greenway, Joe Barrs and Morris – and Exeter slowed to 210 for nine.

Rob Gear had two for 43 from 10 overs, Matt Dart picked up two for 32 and Martin Gear on his return after a break from the game went for 29 in 10 overs.

Miles Lenygon, the Exeter captain, was clearly unhappy about the run-out incident and the effect it had on the game.

“We warned Allin and that was that, it was a polite reminder to say stay In your crease,” said Lenygon.

“I know every member of our side would never actually appeal and I am sure, as captain, I would call the batsman back if they did take the bails off.

“We will learn from it. It's done now, we lost a game we should have won. Let's move on.”
