F Division: Tops send Cherries spinning

F DIVISION

TOPSHAM St James continue to lead the way in the F Division after they totally outplayed visiting Cheriton Fitzpaine.

Tom Richardson (59), Joe Tomlinson (56) and Alex Sparkes (53no) were three half-centurions who helped guide the Bonfire Field side to an imposing 247-3.

Sparkes hit a brutal 53 off 47 balls including the only six of the match.

Ross Treleaven then claimed 4-29 as the Cherries were bowled out for just 96 with Mike Foan hitting the replies’ top score of 19.

Having lost to Kingskerswell seven days earlier, skipper Treleaven was delighted with the bounce back.

“Our batters were able to get in and stay in and posted an excellent score of 247,” said Treleaven.

“Full credit to Richardson, Thomlinson and Sparkes, who again are providing a really formidable top order when they apply themselves.

“A better fielding display from the Saints was well received by the bowlers with only one sharp catch in the slips going down.”

Culmstock’s Spencer Popham was clearly determined to see a swift end to his side’s home meeting with Newton St Cyres!

The visitors batted first and were indebted to an unbeaten 72 from Mike Parfitt as they were bowled out for 184 as Alex Brookes (3-30) and Adam Gingell (3-44), did the damage. Popham then hit an unbeaten 140 to lead Culmstock to a maximum point victory.

Popham needed just nine deliveries after reaching his century and then finish the match off!

Shaldon bundled hosts Chelston out for just 57 with Mark Couch taking 5-15 in 13 overs. There were wickets also for Dave Handsford, Carl Woolnough and Gerard Starling.

Four wickets were lost in the run chase that used up just ten overs with Couch unbeaten at the close on 21 and the other not out batsman being Shaldon skipper Craig Greenwood (16no).

Singh took 2-36 for the well beaten hosts.

Kingskerswell were well beaten at Exeter Civil Service where they were bowled out for 107. Mike Skidmore took 3-24 in ten overs and Kris Calderhead, who bowled a similar number, claimed 3-26 whilst Pete Rowe took 2-10.

Johnny Reed then hit an unbeaten 84 off just 54 deliveries to hurry the hosts to a nine wicket victory, their first win of the season at fourth time of asking.

Hemyock remain one of just two F Division sides yet to taste defeat after they picked up a full house of 20 points in a 46 run win at Cullompton.

Alex May (66), Alex Baird (34) were the principle run scorers for Hemyock with Gary Norman (3-33) and Malcolm Paiva (3-47) taking wickets for Cullompton who were then bowled out for 163. Richard Berry top scored with 47, whilst skipper Craig Hawkins (27) and Tom Hardy (20) also scored runs. Josh Essex (3-35) and A Baird (3-23) took wickets for Hemyock.

Cullompton skipper Craig Hawkins said: “We had a bad day with the bat collectively for, certainly in recent times, we have shown we do have the ability to hunt down a score of just over 200.

“It’s disappointing but then we can now look to bounce back quickly in the next game.”
