F DIVISION
NEWTON St Cyres skipper Dave Church was in reflective mood after his side’s six-wicket win over Hemyock.
He said: “We clearly caught them on a day when they were not as strong as they could have been and that seems to me to be the key in this division this season.
“If you are able to keep a consistently strong side to together you’ll win more than those that aren’t able to field a regular side.
“Paul (McCutcheon) bowled well and, once we had them all back in the hutch for 120 it really did not seem to be too great a total to chase.
“Mike (Parfit) once again made batting look very easy, despite the fact that Derek Hart was put the ball on the spot delivery after delivery.”
Dean Stone (28) was the only visiting batsman to make much of an indent as Paul McCutcheon claimed 4-22 from eight overs.
Parfit then led the successful run chase with an unbeaten 49 and Martin Pearce chipped in with a knock of 31.
Hart claimed three of the four home wickets to fall as a cost of 27 runs.
Yarcombe made short work of visiting Cheriton Fitzpaine, beating the mid-Devon side by 217 runs to go top of the table.
Jonathan Rich was left rueing his misfortune after he fell to a spectacular catch in the final over for 96.
Skipper Mark Parris struck 47 and the home side closed their innings on 282-8.
The visitors then felt the full force of Darren Copp as he claimed 4-290 and, with Mike Barnes also bagging a brace the final wicket, the Cherries reply fell on 65.
A delighted Parris said: “It was a very good all-round effort throughout the side.
“We batted very well and the bowled and fielded superbly.
“It was especially good to see Jonathan (Rich) back amongst the runs.
“He had such a good season last year and has not been at his best yet this term but he looked the part with this knock, and hopefully that will, kick start his run making this season.”
Exeter Civil Service went joint top with Yarcombe who have played a game fewer as they took a winning draw from the visit of Topsham St James.
Vic Murphy (62) and skipper Tim Courtney (21) were the principle run getters as the home side closed on 208-6.
Alex Sparkes then hit 66 whilst Pete Rowe claimed 3-49 with the Saints reply ending on 144-7.
Chelston opener Chris Mabbutt carried his bat for 104 as his side chalked up 206-6 against visiting Cullompton.
Cully skipper, Craig Hawkins had his game ended prematurely, and painfully. Having bowled a delivery that got an edge on the bat, Hawkins sped off to claim the catch only to collide with his wicket keeper Andy Stamp.
Hawkins certainly came off second best, ripping his trousers and injuring his knee severely enough for team mates to urge him to seek medical help.
Hawkins though was having none of it and stayed, all, be it in pain, to watch his side go down to a 74-run defeat as they were bowled out for 132.
James Shere top scored with 41 whilst Jasric Singh bagged five wickets for the Torre Valley outfit.
Shaldon beat morning table toppers Culmstock by 72 runs.
Todd Bulman (72), Mark Couch (36) and Shane McKenna (31) combined to lead Shaldon to 237-7.
Tom Martin (2-37) and Jonny Pyle (2-38) were the most successful of the Culmstock bowlers.
Culmstock were then bowled out for 165 with only Vic Lothian (36) making much of a stay at the wicket as Carl Woolnough, Jack Saunders, Danny McKenna and Sean McKenna, each bagged a couple of wickets.
