THERE was a thrilling finish to the showcase T20 game that wrapped up the Devon Youth Cricket Foundation festival fun day at Bovey Tracey.
More than 100 children – boys and girls – took part in the Kwik Cricket tournament that formed part of the festival, which was watched by around 400 friends and family. A video of the day can be seen below.
Almost all of them stayed on to watch a Devon Youth XI made up of past and present Jcounty youngsters take on a Past Masters XI skippered by ex-Middlesex player Keith Brown and including ex-England star Andy Caddick. The Past Masters XI won the match off the last ball with two wickets to spare chasing 135.
Captain Will Gater made a top score of 41 for the Youth XI in their total of 134 for seven.
Matt Thompson was next best on 28 – Brown dismissing him with a spectacular catch – and Charlie Morris made 26.
There were two wickets each for old Devon and Somerset favourites Nick Folland and Julian Wyatt. Caddick’s four overs cost 25 runs.
Matt Wood, a Devon youth graduate who went on to play for England U18s, them Somerset and Notts, got the reply going with a fine 40.
Ross Acton (26no) gave the innings impetus at the end before former Devon opening bowler Keith Donohue arrived to knock off the last few.
The match brought down the curtain on a hugely successful day for the foundation, which has been set up to raise money for the development of young players in the county.
Around £1,600 was raised directly on the day, but there was more to the event than topping up the coffers.
“Just as importantly, 70 new members signed up to support the foundation,” said Richard Wyatt-Haines, who was one of the festival organisers.
“Eleven teams took part in the Kwik Cricket competitions for U13 and U9 age groups. We had Sidmouth, Lewdown, Plympton and Bovey and an All Star team comprising girls from Bovey and Torbay in the U13s
The U9s’ teams were Ipplepen, Shaldon Optimists, Lustleigh and Moretonhampstead combined, Bovey Bashers, Tracey Titans and Palm FM Allstars
Chairman Mark Ansell said the foundation had been lucky to get commercial support from businesses and organisations in the area.
“Nigel Cousens and his staff at the the Boathouse Tavern & Grill at Dawlish Warren donated the marquee and barbecue – and ran it free of charge, which was an amazing donation,”said Ansell.
"Lloyd Maunder butchers supplied the hog roast and trimmings and the Devon Cricket League supplied balls
“Raffle prizes came from Devon County Sports, Somerset CCC and Exeter Chiefs.
“Finally thanks to Bovey Tracey and the members there for making us so welcome.”
