BIDEFORD have asked James Ford to have another crack as captain as they endeavour to get out of the Devon League C Division at the second attempt.
Ford, the Devon League’s player of the year in 2010, ended his last three-year spell as skipper in 2008.
Chris Luxton led the side last season, but was unable to get Bideford out of the C Division in 2011 following relegation in 2010.
Although Bideford won the Premier Division of the North Devon League played largely on Sundays, Devon League success eluded them last term.
Ford (pictured) will be assisted by Matt Allin, another former skipper and his current opening partner. Both appointments were made at a players’ meeting early in the New Year.
Paul Argyle, the Bideford secretary, said the club had high hopes of Ford and Allin getting the club back in the B Division, where they had been an established side for many years.
”James and Matt are very accomplished players at this level,” said Argyle.
“They know what that division is all about and having had a year in C Division,
where we finished a creditable fifth, they'll also be aware of what is required to get out of it.”
Ford expects a tough summer ahead, but feels Bideford can be more than just competitive.
"I was surprised with the standard in C Division last year - there were some useful bowling sides in it - but as we have a good combination of youth and experience and with possibly two or three more additions we are capable of being a promotion-challenging side," said Ford.
Bideford are keen to get among the front runners early on and are preparing already with indoor nets at Bideford College.
“Adequate preparation for all the guys to hit their straps is vital so we've started netting early again this year as we've got a busy pre-season schedule to get ready for,” said Argyle.
Sessions are booked at the college every Tuesday (7-9pm) from February 7.
New players are welcome to give the club a try.
