GEORGE Greenway hit an unbeaten 37 as Devon Lions pulled off an unlikely two-wicket win over the Free Foresters at Seaton.
The Foresters recovered from 87 for eight to make 149 all out in the 47th of their 50 overs – George Sandbach the last man out for 44 – then had Devon reeling at 90 for seven then 100 for eight in reply.
Tail-ender Greenway pulled Jack Richardson along with him in an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 50, which won the game with seven balls to spare.
Greenway performed two run-outs when Devon fielded and bowled seven tidy overs for just 20 runs, With his batting taken into account, Greenway had a good game all round, which didn’t go un-noticed by director of cricket Roger Newman.
“You don’t have to be a professional to play professionally, which is what George proved,” said Newman.
“When we were 100 for eight I doubt too many people on the ground gave us much of a chance.
“George made 37 off 37 balls in a thoroughly professional manner. There was some great calling and running between the wickets, proper cricket shots and no slogging.
“The run rate wasn’t a problem as we had loads of overs when George went in. Wickets were a problem though, so you have to give plenty of credit to Jack Richardson as well.
“Jack made 15 not out off 67 balls, which was a cracking innings in the context of the game.”
Opener James Fulton, a former United Services Plymouth player who represented Devon at U19 level in 1994, made 39 for the Free Foresters while the going was good early on.
Fulton and Chris Sandbach (22) scored the bulk of the runs getting Foresters up to 73 for one.
Harry Booker (3-23) and Matt Kidd (2-29) slowed the tourists before George Sandbach showed some resolve.
When the Lions batted there were runs for skipper Jack Dart (22) and Rhys Davies (31) at one end while wickets fell regularly at the other.
Free Foresters 149 (G Sandwich 44, J Fulton 39; H Booker 3-23), Devon Lions 150-8 (R Davies 31, G Greenway 37no; C Sandbach 2-29; R Jones 2-17).
