CORNWOOD are hoping for better weather second time around when Gloucestershire pitch up at Oak Park next Friday night (August 10) to play Devon (4pm) in a Twenty20 challenge match. The game is a joint benefit for Gloucestershire’s Alex Gidman and the David Shepherd Cricket Foundation.
The foundation was set up in 2009 shortly after the death of former Test match umpire and Devon president David Shepherd.
Shepherd, who stood in three World Cup finals and more than 90 Test matches, played cricket for Devon before joining Gloucestershire as a professional in 1964.
The foundation bearing his name aims to develop the next generation of Devon players – and maybe some future professionals as well.
The game should have been played in June, but was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
Devon are clearly taking the game seriously as nine of the current 1st XI are in the 13-man squad. Only David Lye and Trevor Anning are missing as they can’t get time off work.
Cornwood have been steadily improving their ground over the past few seasons. Firstly they added a second pitch, followed in 2010 by a £450,000 pavilion complex.
For 2012 the club have added a £50,000 net facility with Olympic Legacy funding from the Places People Play programme. Gidman is due to open the nets before the match starts.
The county club has clearly been impressed by the work going on at Oak Park, which is why they asked Cornwood to host the game instead of regular venues such as Exmouth,
Cornwood are hoping the pull in the cricket-watching public from all over west Devon, who seldom get the chance to see quality cricket on their doorstep.
A corporate hospitality package is on offer - minimum number four - which will include entry, a match programme and a three-course meal with complimentary wine. Contact Wendy Warren (07709 029579) or wendycwarren@hotmail.co.uk with booking enquiries for tables of eight, six or four.
Cornwood will be selling refreshments on the ground and will be firing up the barbecue.
