Form players picked for Glocs T20

DEVON take on the Gloucester Gladiators at Oak Park next Wednesday afternoon (4pm) in a joint benefit match for the David Shepherd Foundation and Gloucestershire's long serving player Alex Goodman.

Connections between the two counties are strong as the late David Shepherd went from Devon to Gloucestershire in the 1960s before finding worldwide fame as a Test match umpire.

Shepherd died in 2009 and the foundation was set up by Devon CCC in his memory to promote young cricketers.

The foundation has a wide remit, part of which is developing players such as Toms who have come up through the Devon Cricket Board youth system but not broken into the full county side.

In form league players James Toms (Plymouth), Rob Gear (North Devon) and Peter Bradley (Bovey Tracey) are all named in the side.

Toms has lashed more than 200 runs for Plymouth in the first four weeks of the season, including a rapid 129 against Sidmouth two weeks ago.

Few players in Devon hit the ball harder or further, which makes him an ideal candidate for a T20 fixture.

Also in the 15 for Wednesday night is Cornwood's up and coming spin bowler Adam Goodliffe.

Matt Kidd, the former Cornwood bowler who left for Bovey last season, is another young prospect included in the side.

Having 15 names on the team-sheet allows Devon some flexibility to give youngsters experience against top class players.

Chris Bradley, the Devon skipper, said opportunities to play First Class opposition are few and far between so it is important to make the best of them.

'The senior players like to be involved in games like this to test themselves and if you look down the list there are nine regulars on it,' said Bradley.

'For players like James Toms, who consistently do well in the league, it is a chance to show what they can do against better opposition.

'Toms, Rob Gear and my brother are all ideal players for T20 cricket and this is a reward for performing in the league.

And for the Kidds and the Goodliffes it is an opportunity to learn from playing against quality players.'
