BARNEY Huxtable hit an unbeaten century in a losing cause as Devon Lions lost by 98 runs to Gloucestershire 2nd XI in a 50-over friendly at Exeter.
Gloucestershire’s batsmen got on with it to make 339 for seven with Christian Purchase getting on with it more than most to make 75 off 34 balls. Cornishman Cameron Herring wasn’t far behind though with 58 off 30 balls.
Opener Huxtable reached his ton with one ball left in the match as Devon were held to 241 for seven in reply. Next best in the 98-run defeat with a tight and bright 34 was Adam Parker.
Devon were always up against it after losing their first three wickets for 41 and an asking rate of seven an over soon climbed into double figures.
Roger Newman, Devon’s director of cricket, said the result was less important than the lessons learned from looking at the county’s young players in action against aspiring professionals.
Said Newman: “We learned plenty about our players strengths and weaknesses and how to get the best out of them.
“Games like this are invaluable and I would like to see more of them next season.
“It does our young players no harm at all to be exposed good players and professional methods of playing.”
