Bovey sign Golding and Aussie batter

BOVEY Tracey have firmed up their overseas player for the season ahead by signing Aussie batsman Damian Bourke.

And Bovey are close to signing another addition to their squad as Matt Golding is poised to make the switch from Bradninch.

Bourke, who was 25 in December, played for New South Wales U19s and currently turns out for St George CC in the Sydney Grade competition.

He has previously played for Penrith in Sydney and had a spell in Tasmania playing for Lindisfarne CC, where he was hoping to impress the State selectors and break into First Class cricket.

Although he caught the selectorial eye, Bourke had to return to the mainland for financial reasons sooner than he would have liked and the chance was lost.

Bovey had been talking to a West Indian batsman for the season ahead, but he pulled out when offered a place in the A team squad.

Peter Bradley, the Bovey Tracey captain, said the club had done their homework on Bourke and were delighted with their acquisition.

“Players such as Rod Hokin and Jules Stephenson who have been with us in the past and play in the same Grade know Damien and recommended him, which is encouraging,” said Bradley.

“Damien is working towards his level three coaching qualification and that first in perfectly with our ethos at Bovey Tracey.

“We have training three nights a week and Damien will have a big role to play delivering that.”

Bourke bowls a bit of leg-spin, as does Golding who took 16 wickets with it in the Premier Division last term.

Golding is a Devon youth system graduate who lives over the border in Somerset and until last season turned out for junior club North Curry.

He had an encouraging debut season for Bradninch, scoring 255 runs, and was selected for the full Devon side.

“Those stats would have made Matt our third leading run scorer last season and they are useful wickets as well,” said Bradley.

“He is an exciting young cricketer whose potential has already been recognised and I am glad he has chosen to join Bovey.”
