Hancock on way to Bovey Tracey

LAST season’s Devon captain Neil Hancock is on his way to Bovey Tracey this summer after leaving Sidmouth.

Hancock, 36, has skippered Devon for the past two seasons, but his appointment for 2012 has yet to be confirmed.

New Bovey team-mate Chris Bradley led Devon in Hancock’s absence due to work commitments when they beat Cambridgeshire in the Minor Counties Championship final last season.

Sources close to the county club executive have hinted that Bradley may be invited to take over for the season ahead.

Hancock (pictured) is a proven performer at Premier and A Division level with runs and wickets for every club he has played for since arriving in this country from Australia in 1996 and helping Torquay to their first premier title since 1980.

Since then he has played for Buckfastleigh, Sidmouth (twice) and Paignton, who won the Premier title under his captaincy in 2005.

Hancock has been with Sidmouth for the past three seasons, during which they won the A Division, three Premier titles and two Devon Cups.

No wonder Bovey captain Peter Bradley is delighted to have Hancock on board!

“It is great to get Neil at the club,” said Bradley. “We are all aware of what Neil has achieved in recent seasons at club and county level.

“He will be an excellent addition to the team and we look forward to welcoming Neil and his family to our Club.

“Neil will not only add to our team and club in a playing capacity but his experience will be a great benefit, to our talented colts.”

Hancock, who lives in Newton Abbot, recently earned a promotion at work that made it difficult for him to travel to Sidmouth to practice and play.

He is still keen to play top-flight cricket so joining a club much nearer to home made sense.

“I still enjoy my cricket and want to play at the best level I can,” said Hancock.

“Bovey have been there or thereabouts in the Premier title race for the past couple of seasons and I am looking forward to having a good go at winning it next season.

“There area some good sides in the Premier – North Devon, Sidmouth, ourselves and Exmouth – so I can see it being a close season.”

Hancock isn’t the only new face at Bovey as medium pacer Charles Hill has arrived from Plymouth having move to the area. He took 29 league and cup wickets last season.

Tom Dyer a promising Devon youth player is believed to be on the way from Ipplepen.

Bovey hope that these additions will help them to improve on last year’s league position of third.

“These players will only help the club and shows that Bovey are a well-respected club on the up and that people want to play for us,” said Bradley.

Bovey begin pre-season nets at the Ashmoor Recreation Centre on Feb 19 from 11am-12.30pm. New players will be made most welcome. Contact Bradley (07828 889625) for details.
