Hancock confident of facing Berkshire

DEVON captain Neil Hancock is confident of being fit to play in the Western Division title decider against Berkshire starting at Sidmouth a week today, despite suffering a broken nose playing for Sidmouth last Saturday.

Hancock was hit in the face attempting to pull a short-ball from Devon team-mate Trevor Anning in the derby clash against Exmouth.

The ball hit Hancock squarely on the nose and he spent a large part of Saturday night in an Exeter hospital being treated for his injures.

Hancock (pictured) was in no fit state to play for Devon against Shropshire at Exmouth on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday, so passed the captaincy to colleague Chris Bradley.

Bradley took 12 wickets for 131 runs on the match, which Devon won by four wickets to move within eight points of leaders Berkshire at the top of the table.

The game at Sidmouth is the title decider as whoever wins will be champions.

At first Hancock was written off for the season by both county and club.

A week after the event the situation looks a lot more promising.

'It looked a lot worse than it actually was and I certainly felt a lot better than I looked,' said Hancock.

'I am probably going to need a small operation at some stage, but I see the doctor on Wednesday and I am hoping he will agree it can be done after the season ends.

'I don't mind a bit of twisting and straightening now, but nothing that is going to stop me playing.'

Roger Newman, Devon's director of cricket, said he was not surprised Hancock is pushing himself to play in the big game.

'Cricket is his life and I can't imagine him being happy staying at home helping his wife with the washing up if we have a game on,' said Newman.

'I wasn't surprised when he said he was going to play this weekend - and as long as he has no problems I expect he will be at Sidmouth with Devon.'

Hancock had no issue with Anning over the incident that left him looking a mess, although the experience has taught him one lesson.

'I had just hit Trev for a couple of fours so he gave me a short one, which is what any quick bowler worth his salt would do,' said Hancock.

'I went to pull it, but the ball got big on me and I took a direct hit. In future I will remember to wear a helmet when I am batting.'

Devon are unlikely to make too many changes for the Berkshire game as they have won four on the trot to get where they are with what they have got.

A fit Hancock is guaranteed to play, which may mean Charles Morris being relegated to 12th-man duties. The selectors are bound to discuss recalling seamer Scott Barlow, who missed the Shropshire game. He took six wickets and scored a half-century in the previous match against Wiltshire.
