CHUDLEIGH’S survival prospects in the A Division suffered a serious blow when they went down by three wickets to fellow strugglers Hatherleigh.
Defeat leaves Chudleigh 46 points adrift of safety at the bottom of the A Division and still without a win this season.
Hatherleigh remain in the bottom two, but are within a win over Budleigh and Lewdown, who both lost on Saturday to drop into relegation orbits.
“It was a win we very much needed,” said Hatherleigh captain Mark Lake.
“The wicket was very difficult to bat on in the second innings, and at 40 odd for five we were in trouble.
“One good partnership got us on target and in the end we won comfortably.
“We we still need to score more runs at the top of the order though.
“Andy collier played a match-winning and mature innings under pressure.
“Targets for the rest of the season are to string some positive results together and start to look up the table rather than what's happening below us.”
Sachintha Galhenage top scored for Chudleigh with 34 in an all-out total of 161.
Matt Heather got 27 on his recall to the side, but the next best after him was 21 from Will Heather down the order at number nine.
Pick of the bowlers by a distance for Hatherleigh with four for 29 was super veteran Nick Rogers.
Simon Gillespie picked up two for 23 from 10 tidy overs.
Knocking off the runs wasn’t a cakewalk for Hatherleigh, who were in all sorts of trouble at 45 for five after a going over from Ben Holmes (3-28) and trouble getting Faisal Khaliq and Will Heather away.
The slide stopped with a stand of 53 between Andy Collier (53) and skipper Mark Lake (20).
When Lake went Collier took up with Rob Cockwill, who chipped in with 22 towards a decisive seventh-wicket stand of 61.
By the time collier was run-out by Matt Heather. Hatherleigh only needed three to win.
“I think runs are still a problem for us but different batsmen are starting to score,” said Chudleigh captain Ed Foreman.
“If we apply ourselves more in with the bat we will get wins because we have been bowling superbly.
“The table makes us look bad but in reality we have been very close in four or five games to getting a win.
“The boys are learning fast and are showing that they can push good sides all the way.”
