Heathcoat looking to maintain momentum

HEATHCOAT will be looking to maintain the momentum generated by their four-wicket win over defending champions Exmouth when they visit Exeter.

The Premier new boys, back in the top flight this summer after a season in the A Division, dismissed Exmouth for 167.

Teenage seamer Jamie Drew took four for 22 - - including the prized scalps of Benton, Baggs and Dawson – while Matt Hague and Jack Menheneott had two wickets each.

Dave Lye top scored with 40 as Exmouth recovered from 29 for three to 131 for six.

Trevor Anning (20) and Gary Chappell (29) chipped in from the bottom half of the order to good effect.

Dylan Penberthy gave Heathcoat’s reply a solid underpinning with 56 off 122 balls and was last man out on 132.

Along the way there was a stand of 48 with Jason Williams (14) and another of 68 with Qassim Adams.

Adams was the second of three scalps for former Thorverton pacer Matt Webb – caught by Trevor Anning for 39.

Jason Parr (15) and Toby Lochead (13) were the not out batsman as Heathcoat knocked off the last 36 needed to win.

Anning, Lye and especially Chappell (2-16) bowled frugal 10-overs spells for the defending champions.

Heathcoat captain Sam Smith – out fourth ball to Webb – said his side had the best of the conditions for bowling and the bowlers to exploit them.

“It was early season and damp so winning the toss was crucial.

“Jamie Drew is ideal for those conditions and if he can develop to bowl as well when it is hard and flat he is going to have a great future.

“I felt 180 was par for the conditions, so 168 to win was a bonus.

“It needed application though and Dylan curbed his normal urge to get on with it and batted through.

“Part of me felt it would be good fir Dylan and Qassim to fnish it off, but it was perhaps better for Jason and Toby to get in and have a bit of time in the middle.”

Menheneott, Guy Bucknall and Hague are left out against Exeter. Paul Elliott is fit and returns. New signings Ben Pitkin and Paul Robbins are lined-up for debuts.

Ben Pitkin, a left-armer who was with Taunton St Andrew last season and has turned out for Lynton & Lynmouth, is a new signing
