DEVON’S Matt Thompson did his county team-mates no favours by hitting 86 at run-a-ball rate in the 50-over friendly against Cardiff MCCU at Torquay today.
Thompson, a student at Cardiff, was called into the side at short notice for to play against the Devon Lions development side.
Thompson went in when Cardiff were 62 for four and was powerless at the other end as wickets kept tumbling.
At 82 for seven an early lunch looked likely, then Tom Warner came out to join Thompson and the tempo of the game changed.
Opening bowler Warner played his shots to reach 41 in as many balls as Cardiff recovered to reach 142 for eight.
Somerset’s Sam Davies came and went for nine, which left last man Tom McGeer to do what he could with Thompson.
McGeer sat tight at one end as Thompson hit out as Cardiff used up all their overs reaching 233 all out.
Thompson reached his 50 with a six off Matt Plowman and added three more before he was run out off the final ball.
Plowman’s last over to Thompson went for 19, which hurt his figures.
McGeer was 10 not out having shared in a stand of 77 for the last wicket.
Pick of the Devon bowlers with two wickets each were Josh Mailling and Tom Booker.
Mailing struck on 26 when he had opener Andrew Salter caught behind by Cameron Grainger.
Somerset’s Sam Mount was in and out for five, going the same way as Salter with the score on 36.
Chris Stone hadn’t got off the mark when Matt Plowman produced a ball that left him off the pitch and clipped the top of the off-stump.
Next man in Dan Bendon reached 15 quickly, then gave it away with a loose shot at Ryan Bougourd which had him caught at point.
Surviving opener Andy Miles was fifth out at 74 when he hit a Harry Booker long-hop straight down the throat of Elliot Rice at deep square-leg..
Thompson dropped anchor at one end but was in danger of running out of partners at the other!
Phil Harris ran past a delivery from Max Curtis that bowled him, then Jon Denning tried to slog-sweep Booker and was caught on the boundary by Rice.
Thompson (23) and Tom Warner (22) got the score up from 82 for seven to 122 for seven in the 35th over without further mishap.
Devon's innings didn't start well as skipper Peter Bradley was given out lbw second ball. After three overs Devon were four for one. Eliot Rice was second out at 19, caught behind pushing forward to a ball short of a length.
Nexst go was Josh Bess, who got a snick to Andy Salter and was also caught behind.
Fourth to fall was Matt Golding who, hesitated in his shot selection against Jon Denning and had his off-stump twanged.
After 14 overs Devon were 47 for four with Peter Randerson (11) and Jack Dart (8) the not out batters.
Poor shot selection cost Randerson his wicket – and he wasn’t the only one as Devon dipped to 91 for eight.
The stand which avoided an embarrassingly early finish was supplied by Josh Mailing and Cameron Grainger.
Mailing followed up a decent spell of bowling with an assured 30 in a stand of 59 for the ninth wicket. Thompson stumped him off Salter’s bowling.
