Cool hand Luke sees Lions to victory

LUKE Bess hit a match-winning 92 as Devon Lions crept to a two-wicket win over a Devon League XI with four balls to spare at Paignton.

The League XI were indebted to Richard Ashworth (Paignton) for his 74 which hauled them round from an unimpressive 63 for four to an eventual total of 196 all out.

Ross Acton (Bradninch) made 46 and shared in a stand of 70 with Ashworth.

Ashworth was finally out on 193 for eight when the returning Hal Kerton (3-20) snapped him up.

Matt Kidd (2-24) was the only other bowler to take more than one wicket. Economy-wise, North Devon’s Paul Heard (8-1-25-1) impressed.

The Lions hardly roared at first with Dan Hardy, Cameron Evans and Sam Wyatt-Haines in and out for 25 between them.

Skipper Jack Dart hung around for 20 off 53 balls, but it was Bess at the other end who started to make inroads.

In stands of 38 with Dart, 42 with Matt Kidd (17), and 54 with Harry Booker, Bess got Devon within 31 runs of their target.

Damian Bourke (3-26) spun out Bess and also accounted for Booker and Will Squire.

Kerton finished the job with an unbeaten 25.

The Lions lost the corresponding fixture last year so the win was a welcome one.

Skipper Dart said Bess batted well, but didn’t win it single-handed.

“We got off to a bad start with the bat which made it hard work chasing,” said Dart.

“Also, we had more bowling than batting, but Hallam Kerton batted really well to see us home.”
